How is it that we haven’t talked yet about How To Make Lemonade?
F-cking MET Gala!
Last week, Beyoncé announced the upcoming release of the Lemonade box set, How To Make Lemonade. Here’s the product description from her website:
The How To Make Lemonade Box Set is a momentous tome and comprehensive look at Beyoncé’s LEMONADE journey. The How To Make Lemonade Box Set gives unprecedented insight into the making of multiple award-winning LEMONADE, with a numbered, collector’s edition coffee table book, double vinyl LP, and audio and visual album downloads.
The 600+ page hardcover book includes hundreds of never-before-seen photos from the making of LEMONADE, and shows the inspiration and themes behind some of the film’s most provocative and cryptic moments. The foreword is written by Dr. Michael Eric Dyson with poetry by Warsan Shire. Beyoncé’s personal writing and lyrics are interwoven throughout the book.
So Beyoncé’s opening up the vault, reaching into that infamous archive to give us “the inspiration and themes behind some of the film’s most provocative and cryptic moments”. And when you think about Lemonade and the provocative and cryptic moments, of course, you can’t help but remember your reaction to watching it for the first time. Like at the 10 minute mark when we were all like…
Um… is this a divorce announcement, what the F-CK is happening?
She never said. She never says. But she might be saying in How To Make Lemonade? Maybe? I have a hard time believing it though. Beyoncé prefers to be studied, she’s not here to do the studying for you. That’s not to say that these 600 pages won’t be gold. Of course they’ll be gold. She hasn’t spent 12 years building the archive to allow for disappointment when she decides to release a few crumbs.
Speaking of the archive though, do you remember the first time we found out about it? It was an interview with GQ in 2013, probably one of the last true interviews she’s ever given, to promote her Super Bowl headlining performance. You know, when she stole all the lights in the Superdome? I re-read that interview this morning, in the context of Show Your Work. And in light of how Beyoncé stopped talking shortly after that, I wonder too, in the context of Show Your Work, whether or not she planned it that way.
Yours in gossip,
