There are new photos of Brie Larson on the set of Captain Marvel—she is still wearing that green not-iconic suit. We have all resigned ourselves to this suit, I just hope at some point between Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 we get to see Carol’s iconic comic book look. But whatever. The real point of these photos is that Jude Law is in them, and Larson looks happy to see him. That’s a point in Captain Marvel’s favor, I suppose. Law is playing Mar-Vell, the alien mentor of Larson’s Carol Danvers. This is a core relationship of the story, and it looks like Law and Larson genuinely like each other and are having a good time. I’m still not excited about this movie yet, but maybe this is a step in the direction of being excited. When actors are really enjoying themselves while making a movie, that energy can transfer into the final product, one of the key secret ingredients of Marvel’s decade of success.
The one thing I have liked about this movie is the casting, but DeWanda Wise recently had to drop out because of scheduling conflicts with season two of her Netflix show, She’s Gotta Have It. That’s a bummer. Wise is being replaced by English actress Lashana Lynch. At this point I am just going to have to see Brie Larson in action as Captain Marvel before getting fully on board. For now, though, I will settle for the fact that Brie Larson and Jude Law don’t look like they want to die while making this movie. Not for nothing, the only time Anthony Hopkins didn’t look like he wanted to die while making a Thor movie was on the set of Thor: Ragnarok. And Captain Marvel is billing itself as an action-comedy, so hopefully this will all work out. I still can’t believe Marvel isn’t managing the pre-game excitement any better—especially after the stellar two-year management of Black Panther—but fine. This will do, for now.
