Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, visited News 5 yesterday and was asked about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. A few emails have come in about her comments, accusing her of being shady. Was it? Here’s what Camilla said:
“We all wondered whatever would happen next and then everything went right. The only thing is that we are all losing our voices now. It’s nice to have something that is uplifting rather than depressing. Everything was just perfect, including the weather, which couldn’t have been better. It was a beautiful day.”
It’s the “we all wondered whatever would happen next” part that’s being highlighted. Because, as you know, royal people don’t acknowledge drama. And Camilla was definitely acknowledging the drama. Was she acknowledging the drama to point out that Meghan is associated with so much trash? As a way to offset her trash past with Charles? I mean, if you hate Camilla, and I get it because Diana is so beloved, that’s the interpretation and I won’t fight you on it. That said, to be fair, Camilla was also the most enthusiastic about Meghan when the engagement was announced. These royals typically speak in clipped tones. Camilla was practically effusive – let’s revisit.
“America’s loss is our gain.”

The word on Camilla is that she’s the one who’s most likely to be candid in her remarks, that she is never stiff and rehearsed which is how some of them can come across. So of course she would be the one to refer to everyone wondering “whatever would happen next”, if not for shade then as an inadvertent admission that last week’s situation was as unexpected and unpredictable to them as it was to the rest of the world. Samantha Markle was having a tantrum. Thomas Markle let TMZ headquarters move into his house. It was a goddamn sh-t show…that ended up being a fairy tale. That’s the part where I’ll side-eye Camilla. Because they persist with their official version of events that Meghan was the one who asked Prince Charles to step in.
As if.
As I wrote last week, after the week she’d had already, what with her rogue relatives f-cksh-tting all over the place, Meghan Markle wasn’t about to ring up Charles all like…hey, can you do me a favour? If we’re talking royal protocol here, in what world would that ever happen? In this world, what would happen would be that Kensington Palace (William and Harry central) would get word from Clarence House (Prince Charles central) that Charles would be happy to help in any way he can and, ahem, ahem, ahem, open to the idea of walking Meghan down the aisle, nudge, nudge, nudge. Which is basically code for – so when are you going to call him and ask him?!?
Like I said, it was a baller move on Charles’s part, for sure. And, as we saw, he got his shine. But let’s not pretend it wasn’t calculated and that he didn’t have anything to gain. This, then, is probably what Camilla’s getting at. It’s not the “whatever would happen next” part of her comments where the gossip is, it’s the “everything went right” – the subtext: thanks to my husband.
