Curly Angelina
Angelina Jolie covers the new issue of CR Fashion Book, one of the most bold and interesting shoots she’s done in years – and it has everything to do with her hair. CR Fashion Book is, well, a fashion magazine, so much of the interview is about Angelina’s work at Atelier Jolie and she takes the opportunity here to talk about the designers and the artists who have been featured at the atelier and whose pieces she’s been modeling.
Like Zolay Sherzad who collaborated with Angelina on the jacket she’s wearing on the cover:
Sustainability is a major focus of the Atelier Jolie brand purpose, highlighted in CR Fashion Book in the Atelier Jolie modular suit, made from deadstock with interchangeable collars. As you can see, the tailoring is gorgeous but I really love how the waistcoat and the blazer can be one piece or two pieces (I think?) and that the jacket seems to flare and ruffle at the back.
Between the collar and the versatility of all the elements, it allows for so many wear options which is something I’ve been thinking about more and more with my own closet.
I’ve accumulated some beautiful pieces over the years. But I’m also guilty of getting bored of things. This is the appeal of the fast fashion retailers, right? New things at low cost, so much turnover, but then also so much waste. Which is why I was so into this video that Atelier Jolie shared a couple months ago about how they offer workshops for people looking to reimagine and repurpose their pieces with people like Simon Ungless. If only I lived in New York, and if only my work trips to NYC lasted longer than 48 hours because I so want to register for some of these classes, starting with this one since there’s nothing I love more than smashing my initials into anything I own; I’m a monogram whore, and I want to learn the flex of doing it for myself – but make it fashion.
Angelina’s cover feature in CR Fashion Book, then, is meant to, as it nears its first anniversary, continue building on its beginnings, showcased by its very famous founder and ambassador. Who happens to be in the conversation as award season begins to heat up. Pablo Larraín’s Maria will screen at the New York Film Festival this coming weekend and Angelina will join Pablo there for a Q&A. It was also just announced a couple of days ago that Maria will also screen at the AFI Film Festival with a red carpet premiere on October 26. So I wonder what she’s planning for her upcoming looks, whether or not she’ll continue to take inspiration from Maria Callas like she did in Venice or if she’ll work in some pieces from Atelier Jolie. Like this gown in CR Fashion Book. It could have totally been a red carpet moment.
Angelina has been styled here by Carine Roitfeld and her team. Which explains the hair and the overall energy of the shoot. I’m not saying that curly Angelina needs to happen every day but it was a brilliant idea to have her wear her hair this way, to shake up the image that we’ve had of her in our minds. The curly hair presents THAT FACE in a totally different way, spectacularly.
Especially in this shot, kinky and all over the place, as if to remind us that, yes, she’s an oddball, and maybe there’s more Gilda Radner in Angelina Jolie than we ever thought…which… speaking of…
Imagine Angelina hosting Saturday Night Live? Gossip Genie this with me!
Comedy? That brings me to my biggest criticism about this interview. Not that I’m looking for deep insights from CR Fashion Book but they left a huge follow-up just… hanging. Angelina is asked about what she geeks out over that nobody knows about. She says “foreign policy” which, eye roll, I’m not sure is that unexpected. But then she adds this:
“But I also like to be silly and love good standup comedy.”
The natural follow-up here would be…
WHO? WHOSE STANDUP COMEDY! What’s the last comedy special you watched?
But instead Carine asks about tattoos! And that’s one of the big headlines coming out of this interview – the matching tats that Angelina and Vivienne got together after The Outsiders, even though, again, we already knew this. What we don’t know is what standups Angelina responds to. Is it Wanda Sykes? Mae Martin? Is it Nikki Glaser? Michelle Buteau? Ramy Youssef?
Who makes Angelina laugh? I know it’s not Chelsea Handler, LOL.
By the way, CR Fashion Book publishes two issues a year. Angelina is Issue No 25 overall. Issue No 24, released six months ago, featured none other than Beyoncé. Not a bad f-cking 2024!
