We just talked about Anna Lambe in the previous post, she’s the star of North of North. Season two is now streaming on CBC Gem and featured a cameo by a legend – Tanya Tagaq. She’s a multi-media artist: throat-singer, experimental musician, writer… who better to play the sea goddess Nuliajuq?
Also, there’s a Dolly Parton connection here. Tanya’s children’s book, It Bears Repeating, was selected by Dolly’s Imagination Library. Dolly, as we know, had great taste.
Speaking of taste and fashion and also North of North, Lesley Hampton's designs have been featured on the show. I’ve worn several of Lesley’s pieces over the years, she is brilliant. Her creations are a celebration of culture but she also uses her platform to educate – and she is committed to inclusion at every level of the creative process, from conception to execution to market.
There are so many wildly talented Indigenous designers working in the fashion space right now. My friend and colleague, Michaella Montana launched a YouTube series, Behind the Seams, earlier this year to spotlight some of those voices.
Jennifer Podemski is well-known and highly respected name in the Canadian film and television industry. She is a showrunner, writer, director, actor, activist, and more. She actively creates more space for other storytellers, championing their work, and building avenues to access for new and emerging artists to be able to get their stories told. Jennifer is busy, and she’s grateful, but she’s also honest about when she struggles, even during the times of opportunity.
I first became aware of Emily Kewageshig’s artwork pretty much exactly a year ago, during the Blue Jays’ playoff run, and my algorithm served me this amazing piece.
Her work is breathtaking! Look at this mural, completed in just nine hours!
Last winter I took the long way home in the cold sometimes just to walk by this one below. When it’s grey outside, during the bleakest time of the year, Emily’s mural was so comforting, so hopeful, and it reminded me to take a deep breath and just keep going.
