Cardi B announced on Instagram last night that she and Offset are “not together anymore.”

That’s not your typical breakup statement but it is very Cardi B. We’ve become accustomed to Cardi taking to her fans in her own voice, not through publicist-approved written statements. What Cardi says in this clip could have been, and probably was, carefully prepared but it seems like an off-the-cuff FaceTime with a friend. It feels authentically Cardi.

“... he’s someone that I run to to talk to and we got a lot of love for each other. But things just haven’t been working out between us for a long for a long time. It’s nobody’s fault… I guess we just grew out of love. But we’re not together any more. I don’t know, it might take time to get a divorce.”

This is a way nicer, more amicable statement than I expected from the inevitable demise of Cardi B and Offset’s relationship. Cheating rumours have been plaguing the couple since before they welcomed their daughter Kulture four months ago. There were multiple reports that Offset had cheated on Cardi while she was pregnant and before they got married last year. Every time there’s a rumour, Cardi has defended her man. Cardi is due in court over an assault case allegedly stemming from Offset’s cheating (Cardi has been charged with ordering her team to attack a woman who she thought Offset was sleeping with.) Most recently, Offset has been accused of trying to set up a threesome with two women who are not Cardi B. If I was Cardi’s friend (and I am in my daydreams) I would have told her to BREAK UP WITH HIM months ago.

I’m not surprised that this relationship didn’t last. I’m more surprised that Cardi said it’s “nobody’s fault.” Maybe the breakup has nothing to do with Offset’s alleged cheating (HA). Maybe they did just “grow out of love.” If that’s the case, Offset’s response to Cardi’s Instagram is suspect.

“Y’all won.” This implies that Cardi’s fans or a general “y’all” are responsible for the breakup. It takes the ownership off Offset. Please. He’s basically saying that he’s not a cheater but that the rumours and the public’s perception of his incessant infidelity caused his wife to leave him. PLEASE. If Offset lost Cardi, it’s his own damn fault.

Cardi implied that their divorce isn’t coming any time soon. We know that they’ve broken up and reconciled before. For Cardi’s sake, I hope this breakup sticks. It’s easy to say that Cardi is too good to Offset (obviously) but he is still, as she put it, her “daughter’s father.” They still have to be in each other’s lives. Maybe that’s why her statement was so nice. Maybe she was thinking of Kulture when she decided to go high.

It might be insensitive to think of the career ramifications so soon after a couple splits but that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Cardi B will be FINE. In fact, she might be better off without Offset. Offset, however, is on a different level. Don’t get me wrong, Migos is still very successful, and will continue to be, but five days ago the New York Times posted a profile on Offset. Cardi is mentioned in the first paragraph. She’s present throughout the piece. Sure, Cardi is asked about Offset in her profiles, but he’s never a dominant character. After a while, if they don’t get back together, Cardi will most likely outgrow questions about Offset. I don’t think it will ever work the other way around.

However this plays out, Cardi won.
