Chrissy Teigen went from the Mayor of Twitter to social media enemy #1 and now is somewhere in between. Her fans are her fans and her haters are her haters and there’s probably not much she can do to move the needle either way. But there is a pattern to her behaviour and how some female celebrities perform themselves online, particularly with declarations of happiness.
This isn’t specific to just Chrissy; many women who are very active on social media will post about how happy they are, then some time down the road say it was just for show and they were struggling and weren’t really happy then but they are really happy now. Rinse and repeat. Chrissy says twice in this post that she doesn’t want to let “us” down. But who is “us”? I think most of us will carry on with our lives, regardless of how Chrissy lives hers. This isn’t to say “who cares what celebrities do!” This whole column is about caring. It’s about how social media has changed the way celebrities show us who they are. Is this vulnerability? An ego hit? A cry for attention? A cry for compassion? How individuals react to it is tied to how they viewed her before this post.
The Righteous Gemstones aka Jesus Succession is in production and Danny McBride has said that each season is meant to be a standalone storyline. It makes it a fun binge watch.
Notting Hill is 25?! I think pop culture anniversaries are overly emphasized but Notting Hill deserves a hat tip because of the enduring quotability and also because it created an important rom-com sub-genre: famous person who falls in love with a pleb. It also had an American star living her London Years, an important rite of passage. Many celebs have had London Years (Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, Liv Tyler, Jennifer Lawrence and Taylor Swift, to name a few).
Credit to DeuxMoi for breaking the news that Mary-Kate Olsen and Sean Avery might be a thing – again. Deeply upsetting turn of events for Olsen stans like myself but good gossip.
Sending out a gossip bat signal for a Broadway follower who can explain the Andy Karl and Orfeh split. Andy reportedly left for his Groundhog Day co-star Elise McCann. Page Six has a source saying the new couple is “swanning about” New York - swanning! There’s on-set drama and then there’s theatre kid drama; it’s gossip set to a song and dance number.
