The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced yesterday that Zendaya will receive the CFDA Fashion Icon Award at their ceremony on November 10. She is the youngest ever recipient of the award joining previous winners that include Beyoncé, Prince, David Bowie, Jennifer Lopez, and of course, Rihanna. You’ll recall, when Rihanna accepted this award in 2014, she wore one of her most memorable outfits of all time:
As for Zendaya… I mean… this is not a surprise. She’s only 25 years old and yet, over and over again she serves looks, looks that are unforgettable, looks that are consistently breathtaking and original. Most importantly, where the CFDAs are concerned, she celebrates design and creativity and artistic expression through clothing. The way she appreciates fashion contributes to the fashion industry – that’s what this award is all about.
And of course it could not have happened without Law Roach, her style collaborator. No doubt Law will be there for the ceremony, there is no way she won’t mention him in her remarks. But first, here they are earlier this week in London for the Dune gala in yet another showstopper – it’s always a f-cking showstopper!
My God, this Rick Owens dress though. Even by her too-high standards, it’s unbelievable. And it’s the way she sells it too. Which… is part of the work, and that’s why she practises. Law showed us on Instagram:
I keep making this point because it’s more than just putting it on her body. Yes, of course, almost everything works on her, but she works it too – she and Law work on presentation, it’s not effortless, it’s not thoughtless. Quite the opposite, actually. There is so much thought that goes into her looks, so much preparation, and often so much research, because as she and Law have both said about their creative process, these looks pay tribute to those who came before, or sometimes they’re a reflection of certain characters and alter-egos whose stories they want to tell. That’s what sets their approach to fashion apart from the rest.
So…what could they possibly be planning for the CFDAs? I mean, my basic ass would have wanted to save this Rick Owens dress for that event, but they obviously have something else in mind. If this already incredible amazing white sequined piece was not what they were saving for the CFDAs, can you imagine what she’s going to be delivering on November 10? I am vibrating with excitement to see what it could possibly be.
