As noted in my post about achromatic looks at the Oscars, there wasn’t much colour, not at the awards proper and not even at Vanity Fair, which is why those who did go with colour popped even more. For Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, it was colour and character.
They were there to promote the upcoming feature film adaption of musical Wicked. Cynthia is Elphaba so she’s in green. Ariana is Galinda so she’s in pink. Cynthia’s dress is a leather spectacle – custom Louis Vuitton, insanely constructed, with similar DNA to Ayo Edebiri’s Emmys dress; you remember, it was leather and looked like an upside down tulip. Cynthia’s is just as magnificent in its structure, the way the leather is holding shape, like a dinosaur, like Godzilla, but make it fashion. It’s incredible.
As for Ariana, this is Giambattista Valli, a designer she’s worn before on impact carpets, like the Grammys:
Her Oscar dress was pink and taffeta but it’s in the same family, right? Voluminous, extra, it swallows here, a wearable duvet… and polarising. There are some people (Duana) who hated it. I don’t hate it, I just don’t think it’s that much of a serve given what we’ve seen of her before. Same style lane, same style energy. So what I’m trying to say is that it’s kinda…boring? I’ve never considered Ariana to be someone we wait for on a carpet – and this look doesn’t change that. Although the reason it did pop more than usual is because, as mentioned, there were so many neutrals last night.
Catherine O’Hara wore black sequins to the Oscars but changed into a much more interesting option for Vanity Fair.
Come ON. This is, for me, one of the night’s best. The wide small-pleat collar that matches the cuffs, and the paint splatter print? A standout!
Finally, Jessica Biel in blue with Justin Timberlake. This is never my favourite colour, on anyone, and does nothing for the design because, well, it’s corporate blue, and by its very nature, corporate blue is designed to eliminate originality.
Maybe it would have had more personality had this come in another colour – orange, yellow, pink, whatever, but in corporate blue the effect is …mid, as the kids say? Which, I mean, yeah, that tracks for these two. Jessica and Justin have become mid. Their celebrity, his music, and speaking of, the first two songs off his upcoming new album have flopped. His album is also coming out around the same time as Beyoncé and Ariana (just this week), and Taylor Swift next month. Who’s leaving room for JT?
