Three weeks ago I posted about Danielle Deadwyler in the site open and how she’s been picking up momentum during award season for her role in Till while people are also enjoying her performance as Zora in From Scratch on Netflix. As noted in that article, Danielle is challenging Best Actress Oscar frontrunners Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh. Last night at the Gothams, she actually won over both of them…and more.

The Gothams are no longer separating actors into gendered categories. Instead they have just two acting categories: Outstanding Lead Performance and Outstanding Supporting Performance. Danielle won the Gotham for Outstanding Lead Performance and she was nominated alongside some of the season’s heavyweights, like the aforementioned Cate and Michelle and also Brendan Fraser and Colin Farrell, four actors considered to be locks for Oscar nominations.

And while the Gothams don’t necessarily predict eventual Oscar winners, they can definitely build buzz for those who are in the mix for a nomination – it never hurts to get your name out there with a trophy next to it, especially in a tight race. And the Best Actress race is pretty tight. It’s a great look for Danielle, since she surprisingly wasn’t nominated for an Independent Spirit Award last week, and the nomination voting period for the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards is underway now.

Danielle was not at the Gothams last night to collect her award but she has been hitting the circuit over the last few weeks to promote her film and all that work will hopefully pay off.
