And that’s it for Cannes 2025 as the festival wrapped up last night with the traditional award ceremony celebrating this year’s honourees.
The Palme d’Or went to Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident. He's been sent to prison twice in Iran for criticising the oppressive government. After he was released from jail a second time, he decided to make a film about “five ordinary Iranians who are confronted with a man they believed tortured them in jail… inspired by conversations he had with other prisoners. Now that courageous effort has resulted in being named the best film at Cannes and possible onto Oscar consideration.

Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value won the Grand Prix (second place) and since Joachim’s previous film, The Worst Person in the World, was nominated for two Oscars, there’s buzz now that Sentimental Value will earn even more, including Best Picture and acting nominations for lead actors Renate Reisve, Stellan Skarsgard and Elle Fanning, now in the (early) conversation in the supporting category.
The Palme d’Or was presented to Jafar Pahani by former jury president Cate Blanchett and current jury president Juliette Binoche. Cate’s in custom Louis Vuitton, a black dress with a sheer ruffled cape.

It’s pretty but I prefer Juliette’s look, the perfect finish to what’s been suuuuuch a great Cannes wardrobe. Juliette’s final fit was Prada – an embellished bomber over a belted skirt over a red trim tee. The t-shirt is what’s polarising but this, to me, is what makes the bomber set stand out even more. And, also, she’s repping the colours of France.
Halle Berry capped off Cannes in Dior… and is this… kinda sorta… a naked dress? I like the high collar on her, she looks great.
And in one of the best white dresses of the entire festival, maybe even the best white dress, Simone Ashley in Vivienne Westwood, OMG. Classic Westwood bust and the tea length is exactly right and the exaggerated to further snatch the waist? F-ck me up it’s so good.

Finally, Jeremy Strong, who wore the rainbow this entire festival: mauve, peach, green, brown, and did you see him in purple?

I want that jacket!
For the closing ceremony, Jeremy surprisingly did not wear Loro Piana, the brand most closely associated with him. Instead it was an icy blue Lanvin suit with a loose bow. He said the jury experience at Cannes was like “Conclave with champagne”. Iconic.
