Hailey Bieber hosted a party last night for her brand, Rhode, and was supported by several of her model friends and other celebrities. Kendall and Kylie Jenner were there, and Bella Hadid, and Lori Harvey and Tate McRae, but also Claudia Schiffer, which is the one who stuck out most to me because the other names you associate with Hailey but Claudia isn’t exactly a regular in that crew.

The other thing that stood out is Claudia’s hair. It seems like it’s a standard beach wave but this isn’t super easy to achieve – how it’s both flouffy and flat on the top, with the perfect texture, not tight wavy or curly but not straight either. You have to be really skilled with the heat tools to make this happen, holding it for exactly the right length of time, not too long that the waves are too pronounced and not too short that the texture doesn’t show up. This is why I always call it day two texture and this may have very well been day two texture because, again, it’s not easy to achieve on clean hair from the jump.

Anyway, back to Hailey, who was accompanied by Justin, and the success of Rhode. In my recent Vanity Fair “My Stuff” profile (page 34, October 2024 issue - I still can’t believe I get to say that!) I listed Rhode’s Barrier Restore Cream as one of my favourite products. I use it in rotation depending on the season so, to go back to Maria’s point in her Celebrity Social Media post today, she mentioned that the UK tabloids are blaming Justin’s possible financial issues on Hailey’s excessive spending. I’m not going to waste my time finding out exactly what the tabloids are suggesting so my assumption is that they’re implying that her work with Rhode has to do with whatever money problems he may or may not be having which…

Does that seem familiar to you?

Because they were saying the same f-cksh-t with Victoria Beckham and her clothing line and how she was spending David’s money. It’s sexist, of course, and diminishes both women’s entrepreneurial capabilities. And fuels the myth that a woman’s ambition isn’t worth the expense.

As usual though, misogyny and ignorance go hand-in-hand. Maria surmised her in her post that “Rhode probably brings in the biggest cheques these days”, and she’s right. WWD reported last week that Rhode will exceed $100 million this in revenue this year and its success is due in part to their scale strategy. They haven’t expanded aggressively, focusing on direct-to-consumer marketing and gradual growth. Justin made the decision to cut back on touring, an unofficial break from music, at least in terms of how he was making music earlier in this career. This, no doubt, has been a benefit to his mental health, and it’s amazing that he was able to see it through under what must have been enormous pressure and, also, in the context of this discussion, the financial reality. Because he’s not bringing in the same kind of money now that he was a few years ago. She, however, is seeing a lot of financial success. So the British tabloids, no surprise, don’t know what the f-ck they’re talking about.
