One of the subplots of the OceanGate submersible tragedy is a new generation of people finding out that James Cameron makes movies as a side hustle, his real vocation is as an oceanographer and deep-sea explorer.
Cameron can be a pill about a lot of things, but he actually does know what he’s talking about when it comes to deep-sea diving, he went to the Challenger Deep, the deepest known point of the Marianas Trench, and discovered three new species of sea life while he was down there. Anyway, if you haven’t, watch Under Pressure: Making ‘The Abyss’ for a taste of Cameron at his diving best and filmmaking worst. It’s up there with Burden of Dreams for a glimpse into a completely unhinged filmmaking process. (DListed)

Remember all those reports that Marvel is The Worst™️ when it comes to treatment of visual effects artists? Well, add director Phil Lord, of Lord & Miller fame and one of the producers of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to the list of The Worst to work with in a VFX/animation capacity. If even half of this report is true, there’s no way we see Beyond the Spider-Verse next year. (Vulture)
