Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have been in Miami the last few weeks during the lockdown. They left their home a few weeks ago to go to the gym and were criticised for it. I mean it’s not like they wouldn’t have fitness equipment at their estate, you know?
And now these pap shots of them celebrating his daughter’s birthday. And ARod’s ex was there, along with some other kids and friends. Apparently they were all physically distancing. Were they though? Doesn’t look like it in some of the shots. And also, the whole point is to not have parties and gather in groups outside of your shelter-in-place unit.
Meanwhile, during this pandemic, JLo and ARod have also been making headlines for possibly putting in a bid to buy the New York Mets baseball club. I mean… all of that combined maybe isn’t the best look right now? Then again, it’s not like it will be a setback for JLo. She has a certain gift that so many celebrities don’t possess or don’t know how to nurture: JLo can breeze through sh-t, have you noticed? Nothing sticks to her.
Duana and I have talked about this on Show Your Work, the way JLo doesn’t wear the jokes that are made about her and other female celebrities quite the same way. She’s been married several times, it’s a punchline that rarely lands on her, and if it does, it doesn’t put her off-balance. Her film flops don’t stink the way flops cling to others either. And you’ll note, Ben Affleck was mocked so much more for the over-the-topness of their relationship than she was. Sometimes it seems as though Ben is farther back in her rearview – or not even in her rearview anymore – than she is in his.
Here’s a good example: JLo was interview by Zane Lowe for Apple Music earlier this week and Ben came up in conversation…but only as a secondary detail to the real story she was telling about Barbra Streisand. I suspect they were talking about Barbra because JLo sang Barbra’s song “People” for the One World: Together at Home concert last weekend. It’s probably better for all of us if we don’t talk about that.
Anyway, JLo told Zane that she’s been watching a lot of Barbra movies while sheltering with her family and that must be the reason she chose that song and then recalled the time they met – via Page Six:
“I met [Streisand] at an Oscar party, years ago, and I was at the time engaged to Ben Affleck, and — she’s really into diamonds, which I didn’t know,” the “Let’s Get Loud” singer recalled. “He had given me a pink diamond, which got a lot of press and was … whatever. I loved getting it, don’t get me wrong.”
Continued Lopez, “So, she came up to me, and like, she’s heard of it. And she’s like, ‘Can I see your ring?’ And she asked me about the ring, but then she asked me — and I thought it was so strange — about being famous, and how I handle it.”
See what I mean? Ben Affleck in this story is a sidenote, a “whatever”, to the time she hung out with Barbra Streisand, who wanted to talk to her about jewellery and fame. Well, for our purposes, that was one of the most famous celebrity romances of the last 20 years. I mean, it’s almost been 20 years!
