The biggest story in the election this week has been Puerto Rico, after a loser at the Trump rally in NYC on Sunday made racist remarks about people of so many different cultures, and called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage”, resulting in what could potentially be major blowback for the Trump campaign, and particularly in battleground states where there are nearly two million voters. Nevada is a battleground state.
Vice President Kamala Harris is holding a rally in Las Vegas tonight where nearly 1 in 5 registered voters are Latino. Many Latino voters, even those not from Puerto Rico, were activated this week following those comments at the Madison Square Garden Trump rally. One of the objectives tonight, then, for the Harris campaign is to turn that outrage into blue votes. And Jennifer Lopez will be in attendance.
JLo has been quite active over the last few weeks in support of the Vice President and Governor Walz. She’d endorsed VP Harris weeks ago, appearing at Oprah’s virtual rally in Detroit and using her social media platforms to encourage people to vote. Immediately after the NYC rally, she once again, along with Bad Bunny and Ricky Martin, posted the Vice President’s platform on Puerto Rico. And yesterday, around the time that it was reported that she would be joining the VP in Vegas, she shared a clip from her Super Bowl halftime performance a few years ago.
You’ll recall, during preparations for her halftime show, she was pushing to include a message about human rights as part of the performance and had to deal with pushback from the NFL because they were uncomfortable with her making a statement about immigration during the section where her child, Emme, was shown in a cage. Remember, that was the 2020 Super Bowl; Trump was still the President. She talked about all of this in her documentary, Halftime. In the end, JLo was on the stage, with Emme, and she opened up her feather cape to reveal the flag of Puerto Rico on the inside.
Caping for Puerto Rico has always been part of JLo’s identity. So her fury over the last few days is real. And I wonder what that’s going to look like tonight at the rally. Here she is with Emme yesterday in LA.
