This post was originally just going to be about Jodie Turner-Smith’s looks in New York this week while promoting The Agency. But then I just watched her interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show and Jimmy asked her about her daughter (who was backstage) and Jodie talked about taking her to see Wicked on Broadway.
Later on she and Jimmy also pointed out her mom in the audience, and that’s when I realised, in all these pap photos of her leaving her hotel and arriving at all her various press engagements, that if she didn’t mention it, going by the pictures alone, you wouldn’t know that she had a whole team with her on this press tour.
This is her reality as a single mother with a career in the entertainment industry – I mean, many industries, really, but particularly this one. The travel is essential and she’s spoken before about how her mother helps to make that happen and is part of the team who comes along with her. These are the details that are unseen and, in large part, unconsidered in discussions about celebrities and how all kinds of sh-t has to come together to make it all work. Behind the glamour, there are family logistics. And of course that’s especially complicated when it’s a co-parenting situation. Assuming that divorced couples have a schedule with joint custody.
When it’s one person’s week, for example, and it’s also when they happen to have professional obligations that involve not being at home, in Jodie’s case her mother is a critical piece of the puzzle that is managing career and parenthood. I love that she shouted out her mother during the interview last night – because there’s so much behind it: the bond between mother and child, of course, and of course probably a lot of gratitude. Also… vanity admiration because, as Jodie points out, her mother is aging beautifully!
Let’s go back to fashion and all of these looks. The Tonight Show suit is excellent…
I’m less into the white coat over tights and bloomers, because I feel like it was a challenge to find a shoe to go with the whole vibe, the black pumps are not doing it for me:

But my favourite – the embellished shirt over the footless socks that work like leg warmers. Obsessed! I’m actually wearing leg warmers today over tights and sneakers with a long hoodie, very 80s. It’s where I want to live this winter.
