Dear Gossips,

In yesterday’s pre-Met Gala post about Zendaya, I mentioned the rumours about this year’s theme, Sleeping Beauties/Garden of Time, and how it was a plan B, because Anna Wintour and Andrew Bolton had originally wanted to make it about John Galliano and were met with resistance.

And yet, even though Jonathan Anderson and Loewe were the official designer co-chairs of the Met Gala 2024, the night belonged to Galliano as Maison Margiela featured so prominently on that red carpet the Washington Post declared “the real winner of the Met Gala was John Galliano”.

As I mentioned yesterday, his “Artisanal” couture collection for Maison Margiela this past January was considered to be the “best in years”, predicted to “change fashion forever”.

Was it conceived when he thought he might be the featured designer at the Met Gala or after he was told of the rejection? Whatever the inspiration, Galliano was a major presence, the biggest designer presence probably. You will see a lot of Galliano/Margiela during today’s coverage. Starting with Gwendoline Christie who closed the couture show in January…

…and who wore custom Margiela by Galliano last night at the Met Gala:

Ariana Grande’s second look, for her performance, was also Margiela:

Ariana Grande’s second look

We’ll talk more about her first look later.

Thanks to those of you who joined us for the live chat at The Squawk last night. That’s where we started gasping and debating over the clothes. Let’s keep that going today. Full Met Gala coverage coming right up!

Yours in gossip,
