You know what tomorrow is? Two years ago tomorrow, Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp. That same day, Johnny was at the premiere of Alice Through the Looking Glass. It would be another two days before the news became public. And two days after that, Amber went to court to get a restraining order, alleging that he abused her. Since then – so for two years now – Johnny Depp has had few PR wins, although, not surprisingly, people in Hollywood and beyond continue to support him, indulge him, excuse him.
Here’s a Johnny Depp headline that doesn’t have anything to do with domestic violence or addiction or irresponsible spending – the first trailer for City of Lies came out yesterday which happened to be Biggie Smalls’s birthday. In the film, Johnny plays Russell Poole, the LAPD detective who investigated Biggie’s murder for 20 years. It’s apparently about police corruption and conspiracy. The movie comes out in September and I’m already dreading all the articles and interviews about this, positioning Johnny Depp as an expert on Biggie and Tupac.
Johnny Depp is currently on tour with his band, the Hollywood Vampires. I still can’t say that with a straight face – the fact that he’s in a band and that it’s called the Hollywood Vampires. Here he is arriving in Pennsylvania yesterday with several chains and beads hanging off his jacket, several chains and beads hanging off his neck, a tattered poncho hanging around his shoulders, on top of a denim jacket, and whatever other layers he has going on under there. Oh and as many rings as he has fingers. And also lots of bracelets. It’s a never-ending list of accessories, all of them meant to show that he has a pure rock’n’roll soul. Loud and clear, JD. Loud and clear.
