TMZ broke the story yesterday that Justin Bieber was cancelling the remainder of his tour dates (14 shows) because, as they put it, he was “over it”. TMZ followed up on their exclusive a few hours later with another exclusive – video of JB in Santa Monica explaining why he was bailing. Let’s start there, with the fact that TMZ was on this before anyone else. As you know, TMZ has had a special relationship with JB over the last few years, supposedly vaulting some damaging gossip on JB in exchange for information. Over the last few months, however, TMZ has gotten it wrong on a couple of JB stories – first they reported that JB and Hailee Steinfeld were dating which didn’t go anywhere and then they filed a story about JB partying at a club in LA when he wasn’t even in the country. Now, with this tour cancellation scoop, they appear to be back onside with Team JB and I’m curious about what, if anything, went down behind the scenes to make this happen. And whether or not it’s simply a friendly resumption of a professional agreement or something more… ummm…what’s a different word for blackmaily?

As for why JB is peacing out on the rest of tour, according to the official statement, it’s because of “unforeseen circumstances”:

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Justin Bieber will cancel the remainder of the Purpose World Tour concerts. Justin loves his fans and hates to disappoint them. He thanks his fans for the incredible experience of the Purpose World Tour over last 18 months. He is grateful and honored to have shared that experience with his cast and crew for over 150 successful shows across 6 continents during this run. However, after careful consideration he has decided he will not be performing any further dates. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase

Were the circumstances really that unforeseen? We foresaw it all last year when he was falling apart on tour, backing out of meet and greets with fans, lecturing fans at his shows for screaming, and I definitely foresaw it in December, when he went on Ellen to announce the stadium tour, you remember that? Here’s what I wrote in that post from December 7, 2016:

There is, like, ZERO pump going on here at the prospect of going back out on the road to get that money.

Go back and watch that video– it was obvious then and it’s obvious now: Justin Bieber was tired, he was already tired before he even started the stadium tour. And now he can’t finish the stadium tour. But this is what happens when you put money over other interests. We have seen it happen over and over again in this business – the burnout, the fallout, and sometimes the crash. Most recently we saw it with Millie Bobby Brown. I’m not saying MBB is going to fall and crash but, as Duana wrote in that piece, when certain things are being prioritised, there can be consequences. This isn’t about feeling sorry for Justin Bieber. This is about how Hollywood works people. Too often, Hollywood doesn’t know how to pace.

Here's JB out for dinner last night in LA and hiking earlier in the day.
