Katie Holmes is currently starring alongside Jim Parsons in a revival of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town on Broadway. She’s getting pretty good reviews, which makes me happy for her. Katie Holmes’ talent and ability as an actor have never really been the focus of her fame, but starring on Broadway and walking away with good reviews is certainly one way to reframe the narrative.
Zoey Deutch also stars in the play, she and Katie play mother and daughter pair Mrs. Webb and Emily. (Jim Parsons plays the Stage Manager.) They were seen in New York yesterday, getting coffee before a matinee performance. It’s trippy that it’s November and people in the north are still walking around outside in light sweaters and jackets. Everything’s fine and this balmy autumn is nothing to worry about, I’m sure.
For Zoey, making her Broadway debut is a full-circle moment, as her mother, Lea Thompson, starred in the 2000 revival of Cabaret. She talked to PEOPLE about helping her mom with her makeup, it’s cute. Zoey is on the list of nepo babies who gets away with it because she is actually talented and consistently does good work (see also: Everybody Wants Some!!, Flower, Set It Up, Buffaloed, Not Okay, never mind her scene-stealing turn in Zombieland: Double Tap). She’s currently appearing in 35 theaters in Clint Eastwood’s Juror #2, and she’s set to star in a new film from Richard Linklater about Jean Seberg and the making of Breathless. Zoey has been working consistently for the last decade, but she hasn’t really pushed to the fore of the young Hollywood set, but I get the feeling that’s about to change.
