After welcoming her first child in February, Keke Palmer made a surprise appearance on the Met Gala red carpet and she looked AMAZING.

I’m always excited to see Keke anywhere, but her inclusion reminded me of one of the most infamous quotes from the subject of this year’s theme: Karl Lagerfeld.

“[Critics] are fat mummies sitting with their bags of crisps in front of the television, saying that thin models are ugly.”

Here’s Keke, who’s a literal mummy, just two months postpartum and open about how pregnancy has changed her curves forever, and she’s embodying “Kaiser” Karl’s contributions to fashion world beautifully. She’s the Chanel-tweed-woman, for the modern day and serving legs and hips and body. I also love her two-toned cape with a train. There were a lot of trains on that carpet, but this is the most elegant.

The look was designed by Sergio Hudson, a Black designer who’s slowly built a name for himself over the past decade since winning a Bravo reality competition series in 2013.

He said he wanted to translate the pastels of early 90s Chanel into Black Hollywood royalty and he nailed it. Between the hourglass silhouette and the hair, the Keke/Oprah comparisons were unavoidable. It’s great to see Sergio’s talents interpreting Karl and Chanel (one of the oldest, whitest fashion houses) on a platform like this because sometimes Black designers get put into this box where people think they only do bright colours and modern shapes.

Sergio also dressed La La Anthony, who nailed the theme. It was more of a 60s aesthetic with that classic Chanel sportswear sensibility. The hairstyling was right and the way La La was posing on the carpet looking out above her glasses? Perfect.

Rachel Brosnahan also wore Sergio Hudson, but he jumped to a different decade, channeling 90s Chloé for Rachel. She looks like a fashion girl! And I NEVER think of her as a fashion girl. It’s younger, it’s sexy… Maybe this is post-Mrs. Maisel Rachel?
