We know the behind-the-scenes queen (because Rihanna is the real queen) of the Met Gala, Anna Wintour, loves tennis, but the tennis contingent at this year’s gala was extra intense, starting with one player from Canada, whose star power expanded beyond those who follow tennis last week when she shocked the world by advancing to the US Open final after going into the tournament ranked 73rd in the world.

19-year-old Leylah Fernandez made a surprise appearance paying homage to tennis greats, Serena and Venus Williams. This simple black and white cocktail dress is by Carolina Herrera, who reimagined one of her older pieces worn by Serena and Venus inside the pages of Vogue in 1998. It’s the smile that sells it and it’s the smile that had the world falling in love with her instantly. She didn’t win the US Open but the Met is a decent consolation prize.

Canada’s men’s rep at last weekend’s US Open, Felix Auger-Aliassime, was also in attendance. The suit is basic for the occasion but well-tailored. He looks great. I would be shaking in my boots if I were them, walking up those stars into a party with hundreds of famous people, but it’s that fun type of nervous — riding career highs at the party of the year and hopefully getting a selfie with Lil Nas X.

US Open champion Emma Raducanu was also in attendance. I had no idea who she was before last night, but she caught my eye because I like her look — minus the shoes! If I was rich and went to pool parties, I’d wear something like this.

Serena Williams attended with husband, Alexis, by her side. The catsuit she’s wearing is particularly ugly, the cape however is bang on. Gucci made them both. A grand cape is exactly what you want to wear climbing those Met stairs. So extra. So luxurious.

Co-chairing the gala this year was Naomi Osaka, who brought together her Haitian and Japanese cultures for this look by Louis Vuitton, because to her American means a mix of cultures. My favourite part is the hair. It reminds me of Atlanta hair shows. She was accompanied by her boyfriend, Cordae, and I just think they’re adorable together ever since I saw him seated in the stands with her family at a match last year. They both seem like the introverted types who only want to talk to each other at these types of parties. So relatable.
