Adam Sandler and Timothée Chalamet have known each other for over a decade. They were both in Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children that was released in 2014. I only remember this because the film premiered at TIFF and Jason’s previous films, Up in the Air, and of course Juno, also world premiered at TIFF. So whenever Jason came to TIFF, with his Canadian connection, it was always on the schedule for us.

Here's a photo of Timmy from that 2014 red carpet, three years before he would return to Toronto for Call Me By Your Name, well before he became the Timothée Chalamet, movie star, red carpet star, internet breaker he is today. But as you can see…he was on his way:

Then, in 2019, Timmy and the Sandman were in Toronto again for Uncut Gems. Timmy is not in Uncut Gems. He came to the festival as a fanboy – he stans the Safdie brothers and he stans The Weeknd and he stans the Sandman so he came to town to support and party. The affection is returned, because Adam namechecked Timmy during an acceptance speech at the Gotham Awards last year:

"We also wish we could be at tonight's award show with all of you sophisticated people, but Daddy said, and we quote, 'I don't want to spend a whole night that's supposed to be about me and my greatness listening to you two newly pubetized buffoons screaming, 'Where is Timothée Chalamet and how can we legally squeeze that fine little Jewish ass of his?' "

So there’s the backstory, and now they’re catching up in New York, playing pickup together, since there’s no work happening right now. Timmy was reportedly supposed to be at Comic-Con this weekend for Dune, and that’s been pulled off the schedule. Dune is due out in December, which seems like it’s still a ways away but… some people think the strike might actually go all the way to the end of the year, and if that’s the case, the promotional tour for that movie, expected to be one of the biggest this fall/winter, will for sure be affected. That could mean no red carpets, no visuals of Timmy and Zendaya on red carpets. Expect a LOT of crying about it on TikTok if it goes down that way.
