Dear Gossips,

Last week the initial projections for the Crazy Rich Asians opening box office had it between $18-20 million. I said I thought we could do better. Yesterday afternoon, the number moved up to $26 million. Now we’re hearing it could be $30 million, which would make back its budget. Hopefully…hopefully…

I bought my tickets a couple of weeks ago for a Friday night showing. It’ll be my third viewing. You know what I’m doing right after though? I can’t wait. I can’t wait to come home. And turn on the Netflix. Because on Friday, it’s the premiere of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, adapted from Jenny Han’s book series, starring Lana Condor. They attended a screening of the film yesterday in New York. Vulture’s Hunter Harris called it “the summer’s best rom-com”. So the two best rom-coms of the summer of 2018 are led by Asian women? Has 2018 revived the rom-com? Let’s come back to this question after Labour Day. For now, there’s even more to talk about.

Like John Cho. His new film Searching earned critical acclaim at Sundance and opens in limited release next week, with a wider release planned for the week after. He was just interviewed for GQ by Kevin Nguyen who did a great interview earlier this year with The Good Place’s Manny Jacinto. Please enjoy this photo that you don’t need me to tell you to enjoy because LOOK AT HIM:

You know what I like the most about John in Searching? It’s that he’s a frantic father worried about his daughter. It’s a thriller. And he gets to play the Liam Neeson role. These are the kinds of roles that should be available to everyone. They haven’t been. But maybe it’s a beginning.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
