Dear Gossips,

The second season of Mindy Kaling’s Never Have I Ever is now streaming on Netflix which means, for some people, they’ve already finished, or will be finished by tonight, or before the weekend is over, which means I have to work harder than usual to avoid getting spoiled on Twitter but I also don’t want to avoid it on Twitter because it’s amazing that the star of the series, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, will be all over social media, the Teen Queen of the summer:

As the kids say, I love this for her, because the first season of Never Have I Ever was a smash hit… during lockdown. Which means Maitreyi, the Teen Queen, wasn’t able to get her flowers and take her victory lap in quite the same way that we’ve seen other teen queens before her do the same. There’s a teen queen for every generation. Maitreyi is the teen queen for this moment and she was in New York yesterday with Mindy, Poorna Jagannathan, and Darren Barnet aka Paxton Hall-Yoshida to promote the show.

By now most people know… but it’s worth repeating that Maitreyi was cast in Never Have I Ever from an open casting call. And now? Well she’s booked her first feature film – it was announced a few weeks ago that Maitreyi will play none other than Lizzie Bennett in a new modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice for Netflix called The Netherfield Girls.

Pride and Prejudice is a rom-com classic. Lizzie Bennett is a classic rom-com heroine. And now a South Asian girl from Mississauga, Ontario is the Gen Z actress who will be carrying on that tradition.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
