Last summer Marcello Hernandez was featured as one of the stars in Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood issue alongside, among others, Sabrina Carpenter. I wrote about it at the time, calling him “my beloved” after a breakout season on SNL last year, hoping that he wouldn’t be overlooked in season 50. And, so far, he hasn’t been, especially after going viral during Ariana Grande’s week for the “Domingo” sketch, which now has over 100 million+ views on TikTok and spawned a sequel this past weekend when Charli XCX hosted.
This is exactly the kind of magic that SNL is looking for and it’s exactly why the people who keep saying SNL is no longer relevant are talking out of their asses. People on TikTok may not be watching SNL on linear, but they know the brand, they’re finding it in other ways, and there are cast members who are appealing to a younger generation – Bowen Yang and now Marcello.
Marcello took “Domingo” on the road on Sunday night, all the way to Los Angeles, showing up at Sabrina Carpenter’s concert and getting “arrested” for being “too hot”. (She does this every show.)
Sabrina does love a short king. In other Sabrina news, last night was the final North American stop on her tour before she resumes in Europe next year. She marked the occasion by releasing the trailer for her upcoming Netflix holiday special, A Nonsense Christmas. There’s an impressive list of special guests including Shania Twain, Chappell Roan, Quinta Brunson, Kali Uchis, Cara Delevingne, Megan Stalter, Nico Hiraga, and more.
Also, it’s horny. Nonsense and innuendo all over the place.
Sabrina’s music, even when it’s not holiday-tweaked, is already horny. Horny Christmas totally tracks with her brand. Which is already an issue for the pearl clutchers on social media who’ve been bitching about how horny her show is. Like Madonna before her, Sabrina clearly isn’t about to change to accommodate her critics. That’s the part that finally made me a believer this year. She’s little but she’s tough. And she’s funny as f-ck. I can’t wait to watch this special.
