TWO! Mary J. Blige was nominated for two Golden Globes this morning. I was expecting the nod for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. Last month, after she attended a party for75th anniversary of the Golden Globes, I wrote that Mary J. was working the award season circuit on her way to an inevitable Oscar nomination. Anyone who’s seen Mudbound (including Sarah) has agreed that her performance is worthy of recognition from the Academy. This morning officially solidified Mary’s chances. What I wasn’t expecting was the nomination for Best Original Song for Mighty River, co-written for Mudbound by Raphael Saadiq. (Garrett Hedlund lost hot points by reading Raphael Saadiq’s name like it was the first time he’d ever seen it, right?) So, Mary J. could win not one but TWO Golden Globes come January 7th. I was watching the nominations live at work and when her name was read, I gave her a standing ovation. Naturally.

Mary J. Blige is up against Hong Chau, Laurie Metcalf, Octavia Spencer and Allison Janney. It’s a stacked category and the most diverse of the bunch. This is Mary J.’s first acting nomination at the Globes. Allison Janney and Octavia Spencer may have the edge on her because they’re established veterans and critical darlings. Right now, Janney is the favourite but I still think Mary J. has a decent shot. Don’t forget, she’s got the crying-on-the-floor, pulled-this-performance-from-the-depth-of-heartbreak narrative. She’s also putting in the WORK and showing up where she needs to show up. F-ck, I really hope Mary J. Blige wins two Golden Globes while her piece of sh-t ex-husband is at home crying into a tub of ice cream. I’ll be the one giving her a standing ovation in my living room.
