This is Mental Health Week in Canada and according to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 50% of Canadians are seeing their mental health worsen during these unprecedented times. I’m sure it’s probably the same in every country.
For me personally, I have found that my stress levels are higher than they’ve ever been. And I’m usually pretty successful at compartmentalising my anxiety. Right now I find it hard to read which has been, in the past, how I take care of myself. I am afraid all the time. And I also feel guilty about being afraid because, obviously, I’m probably in a better position than most people. At the same time, we’re often told not to invalidate our feelings. So I’m confused all around, which only compounds the problem. Again, probably what I’m experiencing is NOTHING compared to what healthcare and essential workers are going through. And single parents. And those in underserved communities.
The Canadian Mental Health Association is encouraging people to #GetReal about their emotions and share their stories to promote good mental health. Here are some resources if you need more information. I’ve been thinking about going on Instagram Live later to talk about Mental Health Week and joining the #GetReal movement and if this is something you’d like to participate in, please use your social media channels to engage your circle – it’s never a bad thing to keep talking.
