Dear Gossips,
Megan Thee Stallion said that if she was going to host the MTV VMAs then what we were going to see was eighty thousand outfit changes. And that’s exactly what happened – look after look after look, so shout out to the glam squad because this is a lot to manage in a short amount of time between appearances.
Like we’re not just talking about the clothes, it’s also the hair and the makeup; she want from a blunt bob to big curls back to a middle-part bob and then long waves all in one night on one show. That’s so much work for the hair and makeup and style team and, as the kids say, she ate every single time, which means the glam artists were operating at the highest level.
With so many looks to choose from, was there a standout? For me it’s between the USA gymnastics leotard and the red dress. A red dress is almost never my favourite, but this one is pretty f-cking special, the construction here is exquisite.

But clothes and makeup and wigs and all the accoutrements don’t matter if there’s no energy. Meg looks great because she FEELS great. And that’s the biggest victory. Because she’s been surrounded by forces that have tried to make her feel like sh-t. Meg has pushed through, recovered from, and soared above a lot of darkness, at a critical time in her career, just as she was acclimating to her fame and success, an overwhelming life change for anyone who transitions from civilian to celebrity. That darkness could have destroyed her. Instead she found the light and it is radiating from inside of her. This album era has been imbued with so much joy, it’s impossible for the audience not to feel it.
And then, during “Mamushi”, when Yuki Chiba came out I lost my sh-t. A whole verse in Japanese at the VMAs!
To be honest, when it was first announced that Meg would be hosting the VMAs, I didn’t really understand the appeal for her, and how she would benefit. MTV would benefit, no doubt, but what was in it for her? And now I’ve realised, it wasn’t necessarily about the professional advantage, but it was a personal ambition: to have some fun, and it was obvious how much fun she was having. That’s all the reason you ever need.
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
