Dear Gossips,

The theme of the Met Gala last night felt like Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball in 1966. Even with the cats that showed up. Did you know that Oscar De La Renta and Francoise de Langlade actually wore furry cat masks to the Black and White Ball?

It was the “safest” Met Gala we’ve seen in years in comparison to what we’ve seen in the recent past, and by “safe” I mean it felt closer to an Oscars dress code – with a few exceptions, there wasn’t a lot of experimentation or pushing of envelopes, not much in the way of super edgy or avant-garde to honour Karl Lagerfeld.

And so many wedding dresses. Two out of the three co-chairs wore wedding dresses. Penelope Cruz and Dua Lipa went back into the Chanel vault for their looks – 1988 for Penelope and 1992 for Dua. Dua’s dress was originally worn by Claudia Schiffer, and I’m actually surprised Claudia wasn’t there considering she was famously one of his muses after he discovered her.

While Penelope and Dua repped Chanel last night for the most literal, on-the-nose interpretation of the theme, their fellow co-chair Michaela Coel went for a more subtle and, in my opinion, interesting read for the Lagerfeld tribute.

Michaela was in custom Schiaparelli and not black and white. But the jewels and chains were there as an homage to Karl and Chanel, set off by a clinging sheer layer that matched her natural skin tone for one of the most exquisite looks of the night. In a sea of black and white, Michaela was a standout in brown. I said yesterday that she would not disappoint (link) and I was right, because Michaela came through with the drip. Dripping in pearls and gold.

As for the others? We’ll get to all of it today. Heavy content day on the site so come back often and send us your thoughts!

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
