I was in flight for the first part of the Grammys so I’d only seen a few looks when Emily our site manager texted me to say that there was a lot of Shōgun at the Grammys. I knew Miley Cyrus was one of them, but then she added Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish too.

It’s the hair, the blunt layer on both sides, and in Miley and Gaga’s case, a blunt bang too.

I LOVE it. I don’t have the swagger to wear it every day, because it becomes part of your personality to rock a hair attitude like that day in and day out, but for one appearance, if you can do it as well as Miley and Gaga in particular have, it’s perfect for Grammy night – rock and roll attitude, edgy and slightly weird, by North American standards that is.

Miley’s Grammys attitude was an extension of her Grammys from last year, when she showed up to have the best time and win. She won again, with Beyoncé for “II MOST WANTED” and then also presented, sauntering up to the microphone to brag about her custom Alaia and declare that she might just read out Beyoncé’s name anyway.

Miley’s long been a member of the Hive. The fact that she went from this…

…to this …

…means a lot more to her than her joking demeanor would suggest. But I do enjoy her irreverence. MC wrote earlier about the performance of pop superstardom in reference to Sabrina Carpenter and Miley too is a descendent of Madonna in that respect. Pop girlies are the most fun, the most entertaining, when they lean into their specific brand of extra. For Miley, she’s a sh-t disturbing punk. For Lady Gaga, she’s all theatre all the time.

The red carpet arrival was theatre.

And then for her performance with Bruno Mars, “California Dreamin’”, it was Mother Monster goes to Woodstock, LOL.

She can do drama, but Gaga is also, always, earnest. And that was why her trans advocacy was so powerful last night during the acceptance speech. This takes courage, especially in these times, considering how vindictive those in power have proven themselves to be. And Gaga did seem a bit nervous, at least to me, when she delivered her message.

Back to the theatrics though – a new song, and a new video dropping on Grammy night. I’m sure MC will have more to say about “Abracadabra” tomorrow but this is pure Gaga with the rock opera and the stage pop and the jibberish, ha. It’s fun to sing, like “rah rah ah ah ah, roma roma ah, Gaga ooh la la”, LOOOOLLLL. I’m into it!
