The press tour for Emilia Pérez has entered its hundredth year as the film celebrated its Los Angeles premiere last night. It feels like this film has been on a never-ending publicity tour since Cannes, giving Wicked a run for its money as the most over-advertised film of the year. But Emilia Pérez is such a big swing, and thus such a hard sell, I think this film actually needs the leg work. Like Netflix is actually putting real resources into making sure people see this film, whether it’s in theaters on November 1, or on Netflix November 13.
The LA premiere brought out the film’s stars, including Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Adriana Paz, and Édgar Ramírez, as well as director Jacques Audiard. French actor Sofia Boutella also popped up, which is fun. I like her a lot, but it has been a minute since she’s been in an actually good movie. Someone cast Sofia Boutella in something good, please.
One upside to the lengthy press run for Emilia Pérez is that all of the actresses come to play on the red carpet—or black carpet, as the case may be—every time. The best look of the LA premiere goes to Zoe Saldaña, because I love hot pink AND her dress has pockets. It also doesn’t help that Selena, Adriana Paz, and Karla Sofía Gascón all wore variations on black, off-the-shoulder gowns. It’s too same-y. But then, this press tour HAS been going on for a million years, so their stylists are probably burnt out. Here’s hoping they can find a second wind for awards season, because Netflix is spending money like they expect a LOT of nominations.
