A little emotional this morning. Because basically just as I was waking up, a new video was posted on one of BTS’s YouTube channels: RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook’s military entrance ceremony. As previously mentioned, all four of them reported for duty earlier this week, beginning their mandatory service for 18 months. Which means that all seven members of BTS are now enlisted.
This is still wild to me – that these seven artists, at the height of their cultural achievements, are now hitting pause on their careers to fulfill the national requirement…just like every other eligible man in South Korea. Which, I mean, we casually throw around the expression “just like us” where celebrities are concerned but it’s never really “just like us” … only in this case, it actually is. As you can see near the end of the video, Jimin and Jungkook are standing and saluting among other civilian military trainees. For the time being, they’re not global pop superstars, they are soldiers. In the context of how we engage with fame here in this west, and what is and isn’t expected on the celebrity journey, this is bonkers.
Somehow the work continues.
Because ahead of their respective enlistments, each member has been preparing more content to be rolled out in their absence. We’ve already seen this with Jin, Suga, and j-hope, who were the first members to begin their service. And we will see it with RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook.
Just yesterday a teaser video was posted ahead of the release of the Usher remix of JK’s “Standing Next to You”.
And next week, it’s the premiere of BTS Monuments: Beyond The Star, the eight-part docuseries that chronicles the band’s humble beginnings and their explosive, unprecedented global success story, promising never-before-seen footage and performance videos. Because as their fans know, they’ve been rolling on everything. They could probably produce 25 of these and still not run out of material.
So, ARMY, this is how we’re getting through the next year and a half. It’s going to fly by, right? RIGHT?!
