Dear Gossips,

Goonies Never Say Die!

If you are 40, you know this war cry. If you are a pop culture baby, well, you’re not here anymore because it’s already been seconds, your attention span can’t cope, and you read that last sentence as “a war is coming in 40 days” and are off to spread that misinformation on TikTok. But we olds are here for the nostalgia.

OSCAR WINNER Ke Huy Quan, aka Data, has a new movie coming out on Friday. The Love Hurts premiere was last night following his hand and footprint ceremony. What a day that must have been for him. Remember, he quit acting for over 20 years because there were no opportunities for him so he started working behind the camera as a stunt coordinator. Now he has an Oscar and his name is being preserved at one of the most well-known landmarks in Hollywood while in the company of some of his most treasured colleagues.

The Goonies reunion included Josh Brolin, Kerri Green, Corey Feldman, Joe Pantoliano, and Jeff Cohen, or Chunk, who is now Ke’s entertainment lawyer! Just in case you don’t recognise him, Chunk is the one in the navy suit and hat. Directors Chris Columbus and the Daniels were also there to honour Ke. Missing Goonies include Martha Plimpton and Sean Astin…

Although Sean is in Love Hurts and showed up for the premiere. And they’ve released a featurette of their reunion on set, with Chunk.

Love Hurts is Ke Huy Quan’s first leading role and he actually turned it down a few times. Because, as he told Empire:

“I didn’t think anybody that looks like me could star in this role. Luckily, they didn’t give up on me. They came back for a third time. I went in and they had these really elaborate slides with me as the main character. That’s when I started to see it a different way. ‘Oh, they’re trying to create a different kind of action hero. Not the type that we’ve seen for decades, but something new.’”

But it was Steven Spielberg who gave him the confidence to see himself and to get over himself:

“I was at an event with Steven Spielberg and he was asking me, ‘Ke, how are you doing?’ I said, ‘Steven, I’m not doing so well.’ Because of all the love and support that I had gotten during that whole award season, I was so worried that whatever I was going to do next, I would disappoint. Steven was very generous. He said, ‘Ke, let’s have lunch.’ And I told him about this project and kind of pitched it to him. He said, ‘Ke, it’s great. Do it.’”

And now here we are – Ke’s at a film premiere where he’s the main character. Fellow Oscar winner and co-star and Spielberg graduate Ariana DeBose was there too, although I barely recognise her with her hair so long.

Back to Ke because there’s one more achievement - that Empire interview? He’s on the cover!

Couldn’t happen to a better person, and you can’t say that about too many people in Hollywood.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
