Dear Gossips,
Welcome back to those of you returning from long weekend in Canada. We were open for business yesterday so if you were offline, please scroll down to get caught up on Royal Wedding and Billboard Music Awards posts.
Almost 30 million people watched Meghan Markle marry Prince Harry on Saturday in the United States alone – higher than the Oscars and higher than the American ratings for Prince William and Catherine’s wedding in 2011. Some of that has to do with the fact that Meghan is American, of course, but also, Prince Harry is pretty popular, apparently the most popular British royal worldwide along with the Queen. Saturday certainly would not have hurt his reputation. In fact, what Saturday showed us was the combined star power of the Sussexes, Harry and Meghan. Which means that the Firm will want to capitalise on that as much as possible.
So, just three days after their wedding, Harry and Meghan will be stepping out today on official duty to attend a garden party in celebration of Prince Charles’s 70th birthday. Charles doesn’t actually turn 70 until November (and there will be festivities in the months to come to commemorate the milestone) but you can’t have a garden party in England at that time of year and this is an occasion to highlight his patronages. Six thousand people representing 386 of his charity partners and military associations have been invited to Buckingham Palace and Harry and Meghan will join Charles and Camilla at the event which… let’s be honest… wouldn’t be generating the attention it’s going to get today if H&M weren’t going to be there.
This is part of the job, an important part of the job. Harry and Meghan are representatives of the monarchy. The monarchy will be Charles one day. They are there to strengthen his position. Right now they’re the ones with all the shine. Like, Will’s name isn’t on the press release, he’s not expected to be there. Because Charles will get maximum play out of H&M today. Charles has been showing us some game lately.
More on Harry and Meghan later when they arrive at the event. We’re also getting caught up today on some of the other celebrity news that was overshadowed by the Royal Wedding.
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
