After hosting Saturday Night Live this past weekend, Ryan Gosling is now on the press tour for Project Hail Mary. Last night was the UK premiere and today he was seen out in London doing interviews and generating other promotional content for the movie, opening on March 20.

Look how great he was on the red carpet when a fan got overwhelmed by the moment.

I say this with experience because I’ve been on red carpets for 20 years observing celebrities and a lot of the time, there’s an invisible forcefield around them – and this is not judgement, because for certain stars they need that emotional protection. It’s too much to receive all at once, not everyone can handle it. So they protect themselves by staying detached, to the point where they don’t really notice people individually. Instead it’s almost like they perceive the entire environment as an experience they just have to get through…even when they’re interacting with people one-on-one, you can tell they’re not really there.

Ryan, though, in this instance, was clearly present. Present enough to take note of the person’s emotions, present enough to ask if everything was OK. It also happened during the junket when he was talking to a reporter, virtually, who was interviewing him from the side of the road. If you haven’t seen it already…

First of all, he’s hilarious – like he is incredulous, and he’s not laughing at Jake but he’s also aware that it’s a totally batsh-t situation and that’s the point I’m trying to make: Ryan is, again, present. I’m telling you, because I’ve seen it happen, so many of his peers wouldn’t f-cking give a sh-t. They hate doing junkets, they just want to get their interviews done and go home, they don’t care about who they’re talking to, they barely notice who they’re talking to, let alone bother to waste time talking to them about their lives and not themselves. Even in extraordinary circumstances like this one. At most they would politely inquire about what’s going on and then get back to business.

Ryan had no interest in talking about the movie. He just wanted to live in the moment of doing a FaceTime call with a reporter stranded on the side of the road. And guess what? It made for good TV, better TV than if he would have carried on as usual about the movie.

What else happened today…

Yes, Michelle Pfeiffer is gorgeous and so is that cognac leather jacket she’s wearing! (Go Fug Yourself)

Today I learned from Kayleigh Donaldson that Swifties got mad at Jack White and then Jack White told the media and the Swifties to be better readers and editors. ((Pajiba)

A new season of XO, Kitty is premiering next month. I watched the first and second season but, like, there’s so much to watch and so much to care about that I confess I can’t remember what happened. So I very much appreciate this primer. (Refinfery 29)

Wanda Sykes in her first dramatic leading role in which she “throws punches and romances a hot tattoo artist”. I’m in. (Auto Straddle)
