Carpets & Candids: Saoirse Ronan's Outfit of the Week

This is what I love about great style – it often happens by turning your opinions against you.

If you showed me this colour, for example, for a red carpet look, I wouldn’t be impressed, especially not in combination with this material. Normally, I hate this material. 99% of the time when someone shows up at a dress in this material, I’m a no, thank you, pass.

But this is my point. All it takes it a great designer with a great idea. And the right occasion. The occasion, in this case, is Saoirse Ronan at the premiere of Mary, Queen of Scots. If you’re playing a queen in a period piece, you can go full costume. I love how these rounded ruffles sweep around her shoulders to create all the drama. I love the extra ruffle that comes across the waist and gathers to the side. I love the placement of the jewel piece off-centre from the hips. So it’s ruffles and structure and height and embellishment and printed words at the bottom. Too much? If you’re going over-the-top, you might as well take it way over the top. That’s why this is such a standout for me. Everyone here is committing to the spectacle.

It’s really too bad then that Saoirse likely won’t be a part of this coming award season. She would bring it, I know she would.
