And Just Like That…
The first two episodes are now available on HBO Max and on Crave in Canada. For many people, it’s been one of the most highly anticipated television premieres of the year, considering the past popularity of Sex and the City, and the drama behind the scenes and also an acknowledgement by certain members of the team about the original series’ – and its movies – blindspots. We have time in the coming weeks to discuss how the characters and how the “city” who was always a character on SATC have moved on and adapted, and what And Just Like That… means in 2021, what space it takes up in our current culture.
For now, though, the red carpet, the premiere last night in New York, and all eyes on Sarah Jessica Parker because this show was and still promises to be big on fashion and also because both she and Carrie Bradshaw have served up some major fashion moments. So this was never going to be just any outfit, everyone knew the expectations here. And the result was…
Well, a perfect choice for the occasion.
SJP wore a grey Oscar De La Renta cocktail dress, with a half pink tulle skirt and we all know the cultural memory of pink and tulle, and pink stilettos, of course, but what really makes this look is the cape. It’s gorgeous, framing the neck and bustlines beautifully, hanging off her shoulders symmetrically, and falling to exactly the right spot. This is both SJP and Carrie Bradshaw, an outfit that tells you on its own everything you need to know about where she was and why, without having to know any other details.
It was a special occasion for SJP for more than just the series though. She arrived on the carpet last night with Matthew Broderick and their oldest son, James Wilkie. He’s 19 now (!!!), a college freshman, and most of us probably remember, at that age, going out with your parents is not at the top of the priority list. In her birthday post for him back in October she wrote about how he’s “away”, figuring out his own life, doing his own thing. And now home for the holidays, supporting mom on her big night.
