The CFDA Fashion Awards were last night in New York. We’ll post some of the notable outfits throughout the day on the site. In this space though, let’s celebrate this year’s CFDA Fashion Icon, the Greatest Of All Time, Serena Williams. She is the first athlete to be receive this honour.
Before we get into Serena’s look though, we first pay tribute to Rihanna because she set the standard for this event back in 2014 when she was named CFDA Fashion. And… you remember the look, right? No collection of Rihanna’s most memorable fashion moments is complete without this look.
I’m revisiting Rihanna because when Rihanna showed up in that Adam Selman dress, every Fashion Icon after her carried the responsibility to live up to that title. And Serena did not disappoint. This black sequined dress with the structured puffed sleeves and all that embellishment is custom Thom Browne, who also happens to be the current chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The signature Thom Browne ribbon through her braid is a nice touch. He created a look to be worthy of the wearer.
Imagine being Serena Williams, already an icon in her sport, and then she goes on, through her talent and athleticism, to also influence clothing off the court. She is the best.
