Two Canadians in one post…
Let’s start with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who showed up at the Met Gala in Thom Browne and people are still talking about this fit. As we covered yesterday, Thom Browne was one of the big winners of the Met Gala 2023 because almost all his reps were winners because almost every look was perfectly both Thom Browne AND Karl Lagerfeld/Chanel. Including Shai’s…
The black and white, the bouclé, the chains, the cut of the jackets (multiple jackets!) – all of this unmistakably Chanel. But the silhouette, with all the layers, and hard right angles, is also unmistakably Thom Browne. Shai, who is from Toronto, looked amazing.
But his momentum did not stop on Tuesday morning when the Met festivities were over. Because yesterday the NBA announced the league MVP for 2023 – Joel Embiid…and Shai made the top five behind Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Jayson Tatum.
The top five! This is huuuge, and it’s not like no one was noticing, but his plays on a team (OKC) that isn’t ranked as high as some of the other contenders in the MVP race. Also, he’s just the second Canadian, after Steve Nash, to receive MVP votes. So it’s a beautiful coincidence of timing that this news broke just as the culture was buzzing about his appearance at the Met Gala. He’s an NBA superstar, and he just emerged as a style star.
As for Simu Liu, he too was making style statements as the Met Gala. Simu of course is a Ken in the upcoming Barbie movie. He showed up at the Met as Ken-Karl, in a custom Versace suit that is also giving Darth Vader. This is not his first time working with Donatella – you’ll recall, he was in a red Versace at the Oscars last year so he’s clearly developing a strong relationship with the house.
Wonder if there’s a campaign on the way. Wonder if he’ll be wearing a lot of Versace during the Barbie press tour. But I also really love the outfit he wore to the afterparty where he was joined by his girlfriend Alison Hsu. These velvet ruched pyjamas are so good!
