As promised, here is our bonus episode of Show Your Work dedicated to Crazy Rich Asians. For almost two hours, Duana and I discuss the movie’s formula, its romantic comedy formula, its relationship to the romantic comedies we’re all so familiar with, and how it both honours the rom-com tradition and updates the genre.
From there, we get into the details: the styling, and how the styling suits the characters; the dialogue and how the script serves the story; and, yes, the mahjong… and… we get pretty detailed on the mahjong, which many of you have asked about. And many others have written about it already. But, as I’m descended from mahjong ancestry, I couldn’t pass up and opportunity to really deep dive on this game and how it’s represented in the movie.
