Shawn Mendes performed for the Queen at her birthday concert this weekend. He’s also promoting himself all over the place ahead of the release of his third album. Today it was confirmed that he’s performing at the Billboard Music Awards.

And in June he’s doing a weeklong residency at The Late Late Show with James Corden. So Shawn Mendes will be everywhere, as is customary when an artist is promoting an album, as part of a larger formula for How To Make a Pop Superstar. On this episode of Show Your Work, Duana and I talk about who that formula has created, both recently and in the past, and whether or not that formula will work for Shawn Mendes.

We are now getting a sense of how Warner Bros is marketing Crazy Rich Asians and so far? This is very, very good work. And it’s familiar work… in a way that kinda took Duana by surprise, which was exciting for me because I can never, ever surprise her.
