Taylor Swift wrapped up the European leg of The Eras tour last night with her eighth and last show at Wembley. It’s the first time a solo artist has played the venue that many times on a single tour. And, of course, it was a record with sales, not just in London but overall as The Eras Tour has become the highest-grossing tour in history. 

 

As always, there were surprise songs and surprise guests. “So Long, London”, appropriately, was performed for the first time. Jack Antonoff jumped on stage for a bit and Florence Welch joined her on “Florida!!!” And then the final surprise…

 

A new video was released, “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” that includes behind-the-scenes tour and rehearsal footage, glimpses of how Taylor travels backstage and understage…

Fans had already figured out the cleaning cart thing so the fan service here is that she’s now giving them a better shot. 

 

The takeaway here for me is how much fun she looks like she’s having; it’s fun to watch people having fun, and she’s selling the fun… and making it ironic too because the whole point of the song is that she was on tour and giving everything to her show while recovering from having her heart broken. So it’s also a flex. “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” serves multiple purposes. She was revealing through song the truth behind that energy and all her smiles while she was on stage. But at the same time, “you know you’re good when you can even do it with a broken heart”. As if a f-ckboy could come between her and her stage. “Try and come for my job” is the song’s final line, and it’s not so much a challenge as it is a gloat. She is gloating here – because she knows, day in and day out, show after show, love or no love, she’s still crushing it at her job. This was always a Show Your Work song which is why it’s so fitting that it now has a Show Your Work video. 

 

Part of work, however, is rest. And now it’s time to rest. Taylor has a couple of months off before she resumes performing in Miami and New Orleans and then in November a residency in Toronto. Conveniently then she’s free for the start of the NFL season so I’m sure everyone from the league to the broadcasters to the fans are anticipating some kind of appearance. Aside from weekend football games though, it has been a minute since Taylor’s been home, months since we’ve seen pap shots of her out with friends for dinner in New York. How long before we get photos of her with Blake Lively? Particularly intriguing considering the controversy that has surrounded Blake lately. Taylor off-duty is usually very good for gossip. Just in time for her favourite season and all the pumpkin spice.
