Taylor Swift: Guest of Honour
Taylor Swift was the focal point of the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards, and she didn’t even perform or present an award. We’ve gotten to the point in Taylor’s career that just her showing up to an event like this becomes the main storyline, and multiple wins are guaranteed.
It was clear this was the case from the second the show started when her name was mentioned constantly as a promise to viewers – something along the lines of keep watching kids because Taylor WILL be on your screen. I told this to Lainey last night but this may have been the first time I’ve ever watched an award show where the winner was announced before the commercial break as a teaser to keep us watching.
Taylor took home seven trophies including Pop Album of the Year presented by RAYE, and Artist of the Year presented by Alyssa Liu. These wins made her the artist with the most iHeartRadio awards of any artist, closing in on 34 wins over the course of 13 years; and yes, I know, 13.
While it might be surprising for Taylor to show up at a smaller award show, it actually makes perfect sense if you look at the way she’s been promoting her new album. Radio has been a major focus with this new project because believe it or not, radio still holds major pull in charting points for the Hot 100. It was one of the key reasons why her single “The Fate of Ophelia” became her biggest Hot 100 hit. Taylor’s relationship with Top 40 radio is one of the strongest in the game, and her showing up to these events gives her brownie points with programmers, plus it’s a way to maintain visibility with her devoted fans. The thing that is most refreshing about her appearance last night was that she didn’t take those wins as an opportunity to promote anything or plug a new release. Instead, she gave each presenter a moment of appreciation and gave her fans an inspirational speech about believing in your dreams and staying off the internet. It was a low pressure evening for Taylor, who still even in her calmest state managed to carry the entire award show on her back.

But just her appearance there is promotion for The Life of a Showgirl so no performance or presentations were necessary. Plus it was a fun night out with her man, complete with classic Taylor vibes as she was seen dancing in the audience – particularly to “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” by RAYE where she cleverly points to her engagement ring during the songs chorus.

She also was aggressively excited for Sombr when he took home the award for Alternative Artist of the Year. I’m no all-knowing Swiftie per se, but I am fully aware that Taylor loves to publicly lift up new artists so it makes sense that Sombr would be in her eyeline (even though I personally do not get the hype). It’s all in good fun and a reminder of how award shows used to be, except back then there were a lot more top stars and the focus wasn’t on one person. Not that this is Taylor’s fault. She is the biggest star in music today – of course she was going to be the centrepiece. Last year’s ceremony was Gaga, the year before was Beyoncé. Taylor was this year’s iHeartRadio ratings hook, and Travis was the perfect trophy husband (or fiancée).
remember in miss americana and taylor said she thought lover was her last real chance to still be at the top? now she’s winning 7 iheart awards in one night with her biggest album and single to date, a custom designed ring on her finger, engaged to a wonderful man being her… pic.twitter.com/ciAf7YgocW

As for her look… I didn’t love it, although it did give me some flashbacks to something she would have worn during her debut album era back in 2006. Some fans online thought this might mean she would announce the re-recordings of that record, because the Easter eggs never stop. I love a Swiftie conspiracy theory because they really give you receipts for every single speculated release or career move she may make, so for all we know last night was just a seed she was planting.
Even with an outdated outfit, Taylor was the belle of the ball and trust me they needed her star power. The carpet itself was pretty mediocre, nothing more than a step and repeat versus the major carpets that the Radio Music Awards used to have (the former iteration of this show from the 2000s). What do you expect from an award show that hands out a statue for “Favourite TikTok Dance”? By the way, Taylor actually lost that one to j-Hope of BTS.
