As Sarah wrote last month, Rebecca Hall’s feature directorial debut, Passing, could be one of the “outsider interrupters” of this award season. It’s a Netflix title, it will be released on October 29, and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of momentum it can generate in what seems to be an increasingly crowded field.

Passing screened at the New York Film Festival this weekend, with stars Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga joining Rebecca on the red carpet for the premiere and also for the Q&A. And as you can see, as we’ve been seeing, if this film is going to contend through the season, the three of them will be serving LOOKS. In combination, they may be the best dressed team of award season. There are no awards for this, obviously, and of course what matters is the story, the movie – but don’t forget, styling has become a key part of promotion; there is a lot of work that goes into promotional wardrobe. We can appreciate that work, then, especially since it’s so f-cking good.

Rebecca’s scalloped split torso dress is gorgeous and I really like the pixie cut on her. This is a new-ish haircut, she debuted it at the Met Gala and it brings out her bone structure – which is insane. Check it:

Tessa’s Rodarte gown is stunning too. There’s a nightgown vibe to it, and a period vibe, in line with the era in which the film takes place, and the fit is perfect. I feel like we don’t often see her in this silhouette so it seems like her stylists, Wayman + Micah, are keeping it fresh.

But my favourite of the three, for my style energy, is Ruth. THIS LEATHER TRENCH DRESS.

The belt. The swing of the jacket, how the leather folds and moves like a skirt, those boots…

Stop it. It’s too much. It’s too f-cking good. But it’s not unexpected. After all, Ruth wore what is in my opinion one of the greatest Golden Globe dresses of all time. We should revisit it every chance we get:

That custom Louis Vuitton, though. She will never age for me, nor fade, nor die.
