Dear Gossips,
It was loud downtown when I was walking to the train station yesterday, seemed like every bar/restaurant had the Netherlands-England game on, so I can’t even imagine what it was like in the UK and how jacked up the people over there must have been.
Adele, an Englishwoman now living in LA, even flew to Germany to watch the match. It’s well-known that Adele supports Tottenham Hotspur and she was in the stands cheering as England’s captain Harry Kane, a former Spur, scored England’s tying goal. Ed Sheeran’s the one in red just a few rows below.

Over in England proper, The Killers were playing their fifth of six shows at the O2 and they stopped the concert to stream the final two minutes of the game. As soon as the match was done, and England had secured a berth in the Euro final, the band launched into “Mr Brightside”. Mayhem!

What turns me on the most about this is the planning. They had to have decided this beforehand. Of course they wouldn’t have been able to know the result, but they would have accounted for the possibility, making sure they could get the stream on the big screen, with someone on their team watching the game play out, and as soon as victory was looking pretty certain, alerting the band members to stand down for those two minutes, and then preparing to go full hype into the song with the confetti. This is how you go the extra mile to give the audience the best time ever…and hold your breath and hope that there’s not a miracle goal in the last few seconds.
As for the song choice… I mean it could only have been that one, right? It’s been over 20 years with “Mr Brightside”, we all know “Mr Brightside”, but “Mr Brightside” in the UK especially is a big f-cking deal. In fact, just a couple of hours before the game started yesterday, The Killers were presented with a Guinness Record for the song’s chart performance in the UK:
Someone on Twitter referred to “Mr Brightside” as “the UK’s national anthem” last night and The Killers are well aware the impact their song has on an English crowd. Here’s another angle.
Possibly the most electric moment of my life. When the Killers livestream the Euros right before England win and they hit us with Mr Brightside. pic.twitter.com/7Hlk4RN19V

For all the concerts I’ve been to, and for how long I’ve been a Killers fan, as well documented here at LaineyGossip, I’ve never seen them live. It just never worked out for one reason or another with schedules, etc etc etc. But it’s finally happening in September and maybe this is what it was meant to be, to go to my first Killers show as they tour the 20th anniversary of Hot Fuss.
“Destiny is calling me…”
Here's Adele watching the game yesterday in Germany.
