Sparkly dresses had a moment at the Emmys. But they very specifically had a moment with women of a certain age, as Catherine O’Hara, Jennifer Aniston, Candice Bergen, Kristin Wiig, Janel Moloney, and Christine Baranski all wore gleaming gowns.

And we can pretty much blame it all on Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, as Catherine O’Hara and Christine Baranski both wore custom looks by Oscar de la Renta, and Jennifer Aniston and Kristen Wiig also wore dresses by Oscar de la Renta.

Candice Bergen’s dress is Dolce & Gabbana, she looked fantastic in dark gold with turquoise earrings. The earrings really make the look, they’re the perfect complement to that shade of gold.

Jennifer Aniston’s dress is a stepped-up version of her usual black/neutral column gown, and I like Kristen Wiig dressing like a disco ball. She often takes big fashion swings, and they don’t always work, but this is a good look.

My favorite is probably Catherine O’Hara, though, she just looks so glamorous and beautiful, and the hint of sheer under the shine is a nice touch.

The outliers are Janel Moloney in custom Safiyaa, Nicola Coughlan in Prabal Gurung, and Ella Purnell in Rabanne. Ella is also the youngest person on this list in a sparkly look, which maybe makes her the exception that proves the rule.

She, Nicola, and Annie Murphy, that is, whose black suit had sparkly embellishments. It’s not like it was ONLY older women wearing sparkly fits, but I find it interesting that shiny metallics was the cross-generational trend of the night. I feel like there was once some sort of rule about older ladies not dressing in “loud” or shiny clothes, and I’m glad we’re throwing that out the window. Everyone on this list looks incredible.
