Thomas Markle always strikes on a weekend. With two weeks to go before Christmas, he decided to send his daughter an early gift – speaking to the UK papers yet again to share exclusive family photos and letters Meghan wrote to him in the past, details about her first wedding, confirming that Royal Meghan and Prince Harry have “frozen” him out. Yeah, dude, I think we got it. No one was out here thinking you were being invited over for Christmas brunch.
According to Thomas, what he’s done isn’t even that bad – and in the process he goes on to criticize his daughter’s husband for the mistakes he’s made in the past:
‘I have sent several texts. Her number hasn’t changed and they haven’t bounced back,’ he says.
‘I’ve pleaded with her to pick up the phone. I wrote her a two-page letter and sent it by certified mail via her representative in Los Angeles. I asked her why she was believing the lies. I also pointed out the Royals haven’t always been perfectly behaved. I wrote that I’ve never played pool naked, nor have I dressed up as a Nazi [a reference to Harry’s infamous pictures in Las Vegas in 2012 and the time that he wore a crude imitation of a Nazi uniform, including a swastika armband, in 2005].
‘I even hand-delivered a letter to Doria asking her why our daughter won’t speak to me.
I mean, at this point, it’s senseless to even ask the question but… HOW DOES THIS HELP!?
The problem, from the very beginning, was that Thomas seemed incapable of not engaging the media, from staging paparazzi photos to making TMZ his personal publicist so that Meghan and Harry were getting updates about whether or not he would attend their wedding not from him directly but on the internet. And from there it hasn’t stopped. Thomas has consistently made deals with the British papers to put his relationship with his daughter on blast – the same papers that have attacked her repeatedly. The Daily Mail, you’ll recall, was the publication that described her as “straight outta Compton” and just last week published a hit-piece written by Piers Morgan who called her a “ruthless social-climbing actress”. Just to be clear, there’s a newspaper in the UK that puts out article after article sh-tting on your daughter …and you decide that’s the paper you want to align yourself with? And this is supposed to make you look good? This is supposed to prompt her to have a change of heart?
All it does is undermine his motivation. Or, rather, expose his motivation. Is the motivation here really to reconcile with his daughter? Or is it to make himself the story? Because if he really wanted to reconcile with his daughter, why would he continue to profit from publications that have actively and repeatedly racially insulted her and dog-whistled opposition to her as a threat to the, ahem, purity of the royal institution?
