Dear Gossips,

Scarlett Johansson made headlines earlier this week for recycling her comments on casting in Hollywood, and who gets to play what roles. Scarlett, like so many celebrities of her status, has often responded to criticism by doubling down, in part because celebrities support each other and celebrity itself is supported by an ecosystem that very seldom tells them “no”. I can’t imagine that Colin Jost was saying to ScarJo over dinner that maybe it wasn’t a good idea for her to play a trans person, you know? Celebrities weigh what other celebrities have to say more than civilians. Everyone else is just a hater.

So what happens when one celebrity does actually offer insightful criticism to another?

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah was just nominated for an Emmy this week for Outstanding Variety Talk Series. Ratings for The Daily Show have been steadily rising over the last few months, posting historic ratings gains for Comedy Central earlier this year. Trevor Noah is becoming more and more popular and this week, during a “Between the Scenes” segment on the show which they posted on social media, Trevor addressed Scarlett Johansson.

Basically, in the most diplomatic way, he’s telling her to check herself. He’s also giving her a template for how to respond to the representative casting issue going forward because, clearly, as Sarah wrote the other day, she keeps stepping in the same pile of sh-t over and over again. So if Trevor Noah, not a civilian, not someone she can dismiss as a hater, but also a celebrity in his own right, if even Trevor Noah is out here saying she might need to revisit her position… do you think she’s taking notes?

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
