Dear Gossips,
So the Emmys last night…
Not sure about you but it was a weird one and maybe some of that had to do with the timing? They happened a week earlier than usual this year, and on a Monday, and basically at the same time as everything else. The Venice Film Festival has just concluded. The Toronto International Film Festival is still in progress. As is New York Fashion Week. And that’s just the big entertainment events.
The major story, of course, dominating headlines globally is the passing of the Queen of England and all the ceremonial events that will take place during this time of mourning.
With all of that going on, then, the Emmys seemed kinda muted. It’s not like the Television Academy wanted their show to be muted, I’m talking about the interest in the show itself. I’ll be interested in the ratings because I’m not convinced people were all that preoccupied with it the way we’ve seen in previous years.
We will of course be covering the Emmys today while keeping an eye on the royal news, and there’s actually some crossover here because Oprah was trending ahead of the Emmys but not because of her presenting appearance at the Emmys.
Oprah was in Toronto this weekend, promoting Sidney, the documentary she produced about Sidney Poitier, and supporting her good friend Tyler Perry at the premiere of his film, A Jazzman’s Blues. For the media at TIFF, Oprah was probably the main target this weekend. She’s Oprah, after all. But there was a member of the media who had an advantage: Gayle King, obviously. Gayle came to TIFF with Oprah and they did a promo on the doc for CBS This Morning but Gayle also took the opportunity to ask about the Queen because, of course, it was Oprah who delivered the Television Event of the Year of 2021 featuring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and for whatever reason, people got all up in their feelings over her remarks and started yelling about her on Twitter.
Oprah, naturally, was unbothered, showing up at the Emmys to present the first award and as Duana said in the group chat during her remarks, “She’s back to full evangelism and I love it”. Duana, as usual, is right. When Oprah speaks, everyone in the audience becomes her congregation.
But can we talk about her style energy right now? She looked great all weekend long in Toronto, and she brought those vibes back to LA for the Emmys. Whatever magic she’s growing in her garden in Montecito is working because she is having a moment. This white tuxedo dress is amazing on her. And that braid! Oprah in a long braid! No but seriously – Oprah’s is doing the most with her hair right now and I’m here for it.

Oprah is serving look after look!
More Emmys looks to come through the day, and more TIFF reviews too. Refresh often and thanks for joining us!
Yours in gossip,
